Educational Environment
PrairieWise
Herbal School uses a variety of locations for classes including
the home and gardens of Kahla Wheeler known as Pilot House,
Tranquility Gardens which is the home and gardens of Madalein
Odell, a variety of retreat centers including Full Circle
Farm, The Light Center, Doolittle Farms, Gaea Retreat Center,
Hollis Center and others. This change of scenery allows
for a diverse learning environment and an opportunity for
students to learn more about centers and services available
in the area.
In
order to build relationships and foster a sense of community
all meals are communal with each student bringing a dish
and contributing to preparation and clean up. Students are
encouraged to prepare dishes using locally grown organic
produce and meats whenever possible.
Attendance
Students
are responsible for being on time and present from the beginning
to the end of class. Students are expected to have done
all reading and submit all assignments and homework on time.
Unexcused absences and tardiness will be noted and any missed
time will need to be made up the next time the class is
offered. If a student misses 20% of any course, the entire
course will need to be repeated. Re-admittance will be permitted
at the beginning of the next class at the same level. Students
missing over 20% of the course work will need to speak with
staff to determine the most appropriate resolution. 100%
attendance is required for weekend workshops and special
events. This may occasionally require the student to take
time off work or to leave early. Students must plan ahead
and appropriately for these circumstances. Certification
in both the Home Herbalist and Clinical Herbalist programs
are based on a specific number of hours and any missed hours
or classes must be made up to obtain Certification in your
program. Tardiness as a habit will be addressed though counseling.
Leaves of Absence and Withdrawal
A
Leave of Absence will be granted to students for problems
related to immediate family, serious illness or financial
problems. Students must submit a request to initiate their
Leave of Absence. A student may re-enter the program at
anytime during the following 12 months by notifying the
school of their intention. After that 12 month period, students
must reapply for admission at the discretion of school staff.
Depending on the circumstances and duration of the leave
students may be required to repeat previous studies. This
may result in additional charges to the student (to be decided
on a case by case basis).
Students
who wish to terminate their studies with PrairieWise Herbal
School must submit their intent in writing. Withdrawing
students will receive a refund of all monies paid the school
according to the refund policy above. Students who stop
attending the school and who do not communicate their intentions
will not be entitled to a refund.
Books
Upon
enrollment the student will receive a book list showing
the required and suggested reading materials for classes.
With the exception of Basic Herbalism 1, it is the responsibility
of the students to obtain and read required materials before
classes. All reading assignments are included in the course
syllabus that is available upon enrollment.
Evaluation and Grading
PrairieWise
Herbal School is committed to supporting its students to
the fullest capacity possible, and we want you to understand
that a serious commitment is required of every student.
It
is understood that acceptance and enrollment in PrairieWise
Herbal School is not an automatic guarantee that a student
will receive Certification in their chosen program of study.
Satisfactory progress and competence must be demonstrated
throughout training.
Students
are evaluated through hands-on demonstration, oral testing
and written exams. Students are evaluated individually on
a Pass/Fail basis. It is understood that suggesting herbals
remedies is an individualized and personal decision, therefore
a well thought out, rational answer will be seriously considered,
even if it is not the use recommended in the printed literature.
The School's system of grading is as follows:
Applicable
to Clinical Herbalist Program only.
P
(Pass) 70% or above on written and oral tests
F (Fail) 69% or below on written and oral tests
W (Withdrawal)
I (Incomplete, pending completion of required hours)
Students
will also be required to demonstrate hands-on proficiency
when the situation requires and oral testing may occur at
any time.
Students
are not only engaged in learning a new set of skills but
also in learning about themselves, their relationship to
the plants and to the world. Each student is looked upon
as an individual with specific needs and talents. This allows
for accurate appraisal of their strengths so that individual
attention can be applied where appropriate.
